Hopper bounding box is a square

What I thought would happen:
When my mouse is over the hopper, I would be able to click the hopper, when my mouse isn't, I will be able to click the item behind the hopper, like the way stair and chest bounding boxes work

What actually happened:
Whenever I hover over the block the hopper is in, I click on the hopper.
