Beacon Beam Will Dissapear On Multiplayer Servers

When i was On The Emerald isle I was in 1.8 using beacons and whenever i look up at the sky the beam seems to dissapear. Is this just me or does everyone get this? How to see it:

1. Go onto 1.8
2.Create a beacon with the beam activated
3.Put a stained glass pane above the beacon
4.Look at the sky
5. The beacon beam will dissapear
