Whenever I load up minecraft it goes full screen and crashes. How do I fix this?

I was on minecraft options and decided to make it full screen and instead the whole screen went black. After a while a small strip across the screen loaded in but I waited and nothing else loaded. I force quit minecraft and decided to re install, which did not work. Does anyone have any suggestions?
