Used memory goes up to 30-35% and resets

My used memory has been going from 5-8% all the way up to 30-35% and then resets and starts the whole process all over again. It has little to no effect on my framerate, but has been bugging me for a while now. I had 4GB of RAM assigned to Minecraft as minimum and maximum.
