Hoppers will only place water bottles into brewing stands if it is connected at the side, and will only put ingredients in from the top

Im not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but when i try to put water bottles into a brewing stand when the hopper is placed above it, it will not put the water bottles in the stand, but they can be placed if the hopper is on the side of the stand. The same thing happens with the ingredients, but in reverse (will only place if the hopper is on top, and will not place if hopper is on the side.)
