running a boat into a squid kills the player

I was riding in a boat slowing to stop when a squid nearby moved into the path of the boat.

Next thing I know I'm dead with the message "croftyraider hit the ground too hard".

Interestingly, the first death in this world was when I jumped from up high and managed to hit a boat, with the same message. No idea if those are related.
