Crash when placing torch on bottom of block

The game sometimes crashes when trying to place a torch on the bottom of a block. It happens when clicking on a block that's 4 blocks above you.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start up Minecraft
2. Punch wood
3. Make pickaxe
4. Mine until you find coal
5. Mine coal
6. Craft torch
7. Dig hole in the ground and make a 4 block high corridor
8. Click on the block above you with the torch in your hand
9. ???
10. Profit
