Shovels not mining blocks like dirt quickly

Shovels don't mine as fast or blocks take longer to mine

What I expected to happen was blocks like dirt, sand, gravel, etc. would mine several blocks quickly

What actually happened was that they do not instant mine several blocks but take one at a time

Get a diamond shovel with Efficiency 4 or 5 and dig a block of dirt, gravel, or sand
