Unable to craft a book.

I have been unable to craft a book. When I stack 3 paper vertically in the crafting table, it just doesn't show ANYTHING in the result window. I have tried several times, logged in and out between attempts and tried on different days and haven't been able to do it since I started playing 4 days ago.
