Extending maps does not work if the new map is shift-clicked into your inventory (from the crafting table).

If you expand an existing map by surrounding it with paper in the crafting table it normally zooms out. BUT if you do not drag n' drop it into your inventory but shift-click it into it, the map will stay at the same zoom level and also the same number (#).
