Clusters of blocks are seen as another block or not seen at all.

I created a new survival world, starting on the search for sugar cane. The sugar cane seemed to be floating with no water to be near, so I placed a block beside it. Once that block was placed, the sugar cane seemed normal and a pool of water appeared beside it.
