Piston not depowering when Redstone Block is 2 blocks above it.

I had a redstone block on the piston and when i powered it with a torch and then broke the torch it remained in the extended condition. It even remains extended if I break the redstone block when the piston is facing another direction (not in contact with the redstone block). It prevents moving the redstone block downward from a piston below.
