mobs pass through closed hatches

I placed a villager ontop of a closed hatch surrounded by walls so that the vilager cannot move. over time about 5 mins, the villager passes through the closed hatch and falls down. The hatch stays closed. Probably needs checking this, as I'm having difficulty trying to recreate it
