See shadows on blocks

We downloaded minecraft for the first time last week. Looked fine to begin with but recently the graphics are displaying funny. Their is a weird shadow on the blocks and the blocks aren't fully formed, some of the pixels are displaying red. Any idea anyone? Could this be a settings fix?
