Blocks don't change appearance right away when placed/broken

When I place a block, I can't see it right away, but I can't walk through it and if I put the crosshairs on it the black lines at the edges of the block show up normally.
When I break a block, I can move through it but it still looks like it's there.

I have tried this with VBOs on and off, it doesn't seem to relate to that.
