Blocks broken sometimes don't look broken until updated

I was breaking an area of blocks to make a minigame when I found this bug. The game realizes that I broke the blocks, but it doesn't graphically update until I place a block nearby. Sometimes, entire chunks don't load, but that's for another bug report.

Steps to Reproduce:
Run Minecraft in version 14w29b
Load a creative world
Break blocks
