Pistons Remain powered while pushing redstone blocks (Upwards and stacked)

In the first screenshot a piston pushing a redstone block upwards will remain powered even in direct power to the piston is off.
In the second screenshot 2 stacked pistons both pushing a redstone block, when retracted causes the lower piston to remain powered.
