Dieing while getting on minecart

Suffering a fall death while trying to get into a mine cart sometimes makes the mine cart invincible once you re-spawn. I can't seem to break it in creative, or survival, and have to use /kill. To recreate, place a mine cart in creative mode, then fly above it, and change game mode to survival. Left-click the mine cart just before hitting the ground. You may end up living, and riding the mine cart, but if you die, the mine cart will not break.
