seeds not dropping with entity

sometimes when breaking grass blocks seeds will pop out but instead of seeds it is just a small black and purple block nothing more you can pick it up and it reverts back to seeds in the inventory 98% of the time one of the times i had it i just picked up the block and the purple and black block was in my hands.
