way too many extra critters

i have named multiple critters (cats villagers evil mobs etc.) and found that every few minecraft days they have a clone or two duplicating them. its kinda annoying when you have a set, small place in a cave where you have a pig pen. and yet to find that the whole 4 by 4 area is filled with them in a few hours of being away, its a pain to deal with!
