Beat up wood blocks disappear then reappear for more beating!

Started a new game in 14w26C. Spawned in a northern forest biome. Started beating on a tree block. It broke up, then re-appeared, and had to take a few more hits. This was repeated three or four times, before I gave up on this rev all together.
