A load of "Unable to locate sign" spam and 95% of blocks rendering as air - in SMP (singleplayer is fine)

As soon as I join my server, I get a ton of "unable to locate sign" spam, and 95% of blocks are rendered as air. Doesn't happen in singleplayer, though, even with the exact same world.
