Fence Gate Doesn't Open/Close When in "Sneak" and Holding an Object/Block

I have a chicken farm 3 blocks down with a fence around the upper perimeter, the fence gate is unblocked and opens/closes fine when I hold down shift and have an empty hand, but will not open/close in "sneak" mode if I have something in my hand.
