Lava placed at waist/head level does not have top surface rendered

Screenshot is clear, I think. I'm standing in water, placing lava in a 1-block high hole, and while the lava's side textures are drawn, its top texture, which I should also be able to see from that angle, isn't. Problem persists as the lava flows as well - see lavabug2.png.
