Guardian laser beam particles don't show up

So I was messing with guardians. I spawned one in, to test it. it WAS doing range damage, but I couldn't see or hear the laser. I use minimal settings, but tried all 3 particle settings. still nothing. not sure if it happens when they spawn naturally. after a test of coming out and back in, they returned to normal. my guess is that with minimal settings, or when using the spawn egg, the laser is invisible.
