brand new ps3 disk cannot create a world - disconnected from server

I cannot get the PS3 version to create a world which makes the game unplayable. It claims it is getting disconnected from the server. Sony Tech support has rules out any issue with my connection to them. the problem is either the game or the servers. I just got an update/patch but the problem persists.
