Relative selectors

I'm trying to get one specific block of air to kill all entities that enter it. I used a redstone clock spamming the command "kill @e[x=~,y=~3,z=~,r=1]." This command block is 4 blocks underground. It's either giving me a format error, or a "Choose an entity" message.
