"kill" command doesn't work in Minecraft server command line

From the console I to kill off a player, but receive this error:

 
kill [player_name]
2012-12-28 13:01:51 [INFO] You must specify which player you wish to perform this action on.

Note: for "[player_name]" I am actually putting the players user name.
