Unable to remove items from inventory

I started a new survival world. As one would normally do, I punched a tree to make some planks for a Crafting Table. When I went to make the log into planks, I could not pick it up to place in the crafting square. Thinking it was something with my world file, I created a new world in creative mode and I couldn't remove anything from the creative menu
