Complete Inventory loss upon joining LAN world

Upon logging into the LAN world I play with my husband, I found that my entire Inventory had vanished, and I reappeared at the spawn point. We play vanilla, with no mods of any description. I'm gutted, I've lost some enchanted items that I spent lots of time creating.
