Inventory is deleted in player inventory and chests when I log back into a world

When I log into minecraft and open a world I have been on before my inventory is wiped and most of my chests. This has happened on multiple versions and in two different worlds. The worlds were created on different installs of the same windows 7 home premium disk. I am playing on single player survival.
