Items Turning into Stone

I was playing on a save in Minecraft 14w11b. I dropped a bunch of items on the ground (specifically, ghast tears, but it can be any item) and hopped on to Minecraft 1.7.6-pre2. When I opened up the world, all of the items were turned into stone. Is 1.7.6-pre2 not reading the item ids correctly?
