E key not working after loading game (cannot interact with anything)

I started the game by double-clicking the Minecraft icon. It said it could not autolog me in (for some reason) so I had to relog. I opened a saved game and could move around using w,a,s,d and space, but everytime I press E all that happens is it opens my personal inventory. I can't open doors, ovens or boxes or use my bed. I logged out and logged in, no change. I downloaded the most current version of Java and tried again. Still not working.

1. Load minecraft
2. Load a saved game
3. Walk up to something (chest, bed, door) and hit "E". Your personal inventory (character inventory) will open.
