unable to harvest oak wood in windows 8.1

i'm playing the demo version and i spent an entire day (game time) whacking away at a tree with my stone axe and i didn't get a single piece of wood. i can harvest oak wood using the stone axe within 5 or 6 whacks on my laptop running the demo version on windows XP
