can't break blocks at all

i can't break blocks in creative or survival at all. no breaking animation is displayed in survival no matter how long i hold and nothing happens at all in creative. same goes for servers, whether they be survival or creative. i already deleted and reinstalled the launcher and everything else the internet suggests didn't work. this is really infuriating. and, no i am NOT in adventure mode.
