Minecraft world seeds only produce some biomes on large scale

The new biome generator is great, but there is a huge issue: when a world is generated and explored to a great extent, only a certain subset of biome types is ever generated. For example, in the following world:

...the only biomes that appear are Taiga, plains, some forests, ocean, etc. No desert, swamp, jungle, birch forest, mesa, savannah, etc.

This may or may not universally apply to all seeds, but in the ones I have tested, the severe biome limitation has occured.
