Game crashes/Severe Lag

Game randomly experiences server lag, even in singleplayer. Objects cannot be interacted with, and mobs positions are not updated. When the game is closed, the launcher does not reappear for several minutes, though the computer continues to run as if minecraft was still playing. Often crashes due to a ticking entity during this time.

Not sure how to replicate the bug, as it seems to happen at random.
