Fireworks can go through 1-2 blocks

If a firework is placed on the bottom of a block, it will travel right through it. It can sometimes go through two blocks, but doesn't always succeed. If there are three or more, the the firework will get stuck in it and blow up in it, and the particles will pop out of it.
