Switching to a looting sword after throwing a splash potion yields very few drops.

I had my chicken farm going for a while, piling up.
I had around 150 chickens and i threw a damage pot and quickly switched to my looting III sword as it usually gave the improved drop rate without taking off durability.
Of the chickens killed, i went from level 9 to 12, got only 32 feathers, and NO raw chicken.
I know there's been work on the looting system but I doubt this is intentional.
Not game ruining to any extent, but it's kind of frustrating, as i put at least an hour into gathering the chickens.
