Minecraft crashes when placing rocket with no stars

When creating a rocket without any stars (gunpowder and a single paper on top, no stars), a blank rocket is created. Upon placing this rocket, the server disconnects the player with a java.lang.NullPointerException (only affects SMP, not SSP)
