enchanted diamond leggings taking multiple durabilty when hit only once

I'm not sure about any other enchantments but my pair of diamond leggings (with protection IV, unbreaking III, and thorns I seem to be taking multiple durability away when hit only once. It's significant too. up to 5 durability at a time, maybe more.
