Inventory problems both survival and creative

when i try to pick items in creative. i can only do it by putting my cursor over the item and pressing a number. once its in my inventory i cant pick it up and move it around. same when in survival mode. when i cut down a tree i get the wood, but i cant move it around nor put in in a chest
