Minecraft crashes when Java looks for an update

When playing Minecraft (set to peaceful), the screen suddenly went black and the game stopped working. The launcher was still open.
This happened when Java tried looking for an update.

What I expected to happen was...:
Well, since there was no new update, there shouldn´t have happened anything at all.

What actually happened was...:
I crashed back to desktop.
