Sword defaults to hitting block over player entity.

When I'm playing with my brother on a vanilla server over our network, we attempted to hit each other with swords. I expected my sword to hit him and do damage, but instead it passed through him and I heard it hit the block instead. I've attached a couple of great artwork masterpieces trying to demonstrate what was happening.
