Crashing when Entering the Nether

What I expected to happen was...:
I was entering the nether from a second active portal, third portal built and jumped through to the nether expecting to see the nether.

What actually happened was...:
I hear what sounds like a ghast fireball and a glimpse of the nether loading before my game crashes to the launcher.

It is currently just in a 3 x 3 opening with dirt on the corners. One of them that is also 3x3 with stone on the sides seems to crash the game and lock up as opposed to being pushed back to the launcher
