Items lost when placed in chest before save and exit

Items added to a chest shortly before hitting save and exit are lost and no longer appear in the chest or inventory on restarting the world.

There are multiple Minecraft log ons in use on a single computer under one Windows user profile but this issue occurs even if the no log off and log ons have occurred.
