Blocks in my world regenerate after mining them on singleplayer after updating from an earlier version

What I expect to happen:
When I mine the block I expect for it to break on the first time.

What happens:
It takes 4-5 attempts to break the block and sometimes more. This happened after I updated my minecraft to 1.7.4 I don't recall my previous version. Also when I create a new map I do not run into this issue.
