Nether Crashing

Whenever im on SMP and i try to enter the nether, the moment i go thru the portal, the game crashes. but it only happens when im in the overworld entering the nether, ill get back on the server and ill be in the nether and when i use the portal to go back to the overworld, it works perfectly.
