Whenever I break a block everything turns black.

I hadn't played in a long time and a friend asked me to join his server, when I did I started to punch down a tree (I could see all the textures at this point) and whenever I broke the block all of the blocks turned black and the water turned gray. The blocks in my inventory are black also.

I don't have this problem with Minecraft on the old launcher (1.5.2).

I've tried reinstalling Minecraft several times and installing a texture pack, and neither of those helped at all.

Any help would be massively appreciated, thanks in advance
