Minecraft will not start

What I expected to happen was...:
The game should start.

What actually happened was...:
Loaded terrain, but then went to a screen with only dirt blocks on it (title screen). No progress was made and then a window that says:

Java(TM Platform SE binary has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

pops up.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Try to start up Minecraft.
2. watch it not work.
